Ron was a boy with springy brown curls and shoes that squeaked on their kitchen tiles. He loved climbing up the apple tree by the window and reading about faraway jungles, pirates, and treasure maps. Ron had a little sister named Nir, who was only three years old. Nir had bright eyes, a giggle that made their dog Barky wag his tail twice as fast, and a habit of making everyone look her way. One sunny morning, when pancakes sizzled in the pan, Ron slid into his usual chair. But before he could even ask for syrup, Nir dropped her spoon and Mama rushed over to help. Papa said, “Nir, what a clever tower you built!” while Ron sat quietly, his fork poking a lonely pancake. He felt like a shadow while Nir shone like the sun.
