Elizabeth was a girl with two twinkling eyes and a mop of curly hair that bounced when she ran. She lived with her parents in a small yellow house on the edge of Maplewood Forest, but there was one thing about her that wasn’t particularly brave—Elizabeth was terribly afraid of the dark. Every night, when her parents kissed her goodnight and turned off the lamp, the shadows in her room seemed to stretch and dance. The wind howling through the trees outside sounded like ghostly whispers, and the closet door looked like the entrance to a cave filled with monsters. Elizabeth would pull her covers up to her chin, squeeze her eyes shut, and count the minutes until morning. One day, after another sleepless night, Elizabeth decided she must do something about her fear.
